Anne-Marie Culhane, ACED Climate Change Champion, from Tidelines has led the Overwintering project working with Sarah Owen and Emma Welton inspired by the precious estuary habitat and its seasonal migratory birds at the darkest time of year. The project is supported by the Creative East Devon fund and funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Artists and musicians spent time in January and February 2024 listening, singing and sounding with and around the estuary and exploring estuary habitats at different times of the tides, moon cycle, day and night. The Exe Estuary is an internationally important site for wildlife and habitats, in part because of these seasonal visitors. This includes status as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Ramsar, and a Special Protection Area.
They learnt about the overwintering birds with South East Devon Wildlife nature wardens, RSPB and other keen birders. They created six pieces to reflect their experiences. Discover the sound and movement scores, recordings and imagery associated with each piece
You can read more about the project on the Tidelines website.
